Dian, 1987

Dian was inspired by the life and work of zoologist Dian Fossey, who spent more than two decades studying the endangered gorillas of the Rwandan mountain forest before her unsolved murder in 1985. Fossey’s book, Gorillas in the Mist (1983), and then her death deeply impacted John and he wanted to create a monumental sculpture to honor her. This was his first piece in high reflecting stainless steel, as he wanted the viewer to be able to see their own reflection in the sculpture, inspiring us to contemplate our relationships with the natural world and our responsibility to protect it before it is too late.
