Athleta, 1990

Invited to compete to create a monumental sculpture for the Athletic Center of the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Raimondi choose an unorthodox approach. Rather than submitting a model, he presented the committee with a one-page statement describing the process he would use to create the work. He proposed to work on-site in Kearney, photographing and drawing student athletes in a full range of sports, swimming, football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. He occupied a studio for six weeks on campus and then worked with students to fabricate the 29-foot-tall bronze sculpture.
